Great book for therapists and clients alike!, February 21, 2009

This book has loads of handouts, quotes, worksheets to help with anger, depression, irrational thinking, anxiety, and generally promotes wellness and healthy thinking skills. Makes a lot of sense! You don't have to be a therapist to appreciate the lessons.

Dr. Maultsby's book actually gives a solid process and methods to practice to help yourself feel as good as you want to feel. Buy several copies so you can give copies to your friends and loved ones. It will be the biggest favor you can do for them.

This book has so many handouts, worksheets that you are allowed to reproduce. There is a wealth of information in this book. Can be used for individual as well as groups therapy, or used alone for self-help worksheets and lessons. Very easy to follow and very practical. This is a great resource for working on life skills, self esteem, dealing with negative thinking and learning to think more positively.

A very informative, helpful and interesting book, May 24, 1999

This is really a great book. For a layperson like myself who's looking for an intelligent, informed discussion of perfectionism, and suggestions for how to find relief from its more negative aspects, "When Perfect Isn't Good Enough" strikes an excellent balance between an overly technical professional text and the all-too-common self-help book that's too high on fluff and too low on content. This book - which I very much enjoyed reading - is packed with useful information (and good exercises) on how to break free from patterns of perfectionistic thinking and behavior; and it contains what I thought were interesting and insightful discussions on how perfectionism ties together with depression, anger, social anxiety, worry, and other "not so pleasant" dispositions that many of us realize to some degree or other. I found the book quite helpful, and expect to get a fair bit more out of it. Antony and Swinson are clearly experts. Of all the books I've read or looked at on the topic, this one's the best. I highly recommend it.

This book is a great resource for anyone working with Children in a counseling setting. The activities are easy to use and cover a wide range of topics. The kids I work with have really enjoyed participating in the activities and taking home what we work on each session.

I selected this book in order to complete a required communications class assignment that I am presently enrolled in. The title of the book caught my attention. I am an Assessment Coordinator and I work with approximately 10 to 20 individuals at a time with a new group every three weeks. Several of the issues that I need to address that are a major concern with our clients are covered in Alanna Jone's book. These are issues dealing with self-esteem, communication, anger management, self discovery and coping skills. As instructors and parents we often find ourselves in situations where people are resistant to learning. The many reasons for this vary.
Some of the first activities I used from Alanna book were the Creative Coloring, the Good, Bad and Ugly and Create a country activities. The activities gave individuals an opportunity to make their oun choices, to support and encourage one another and to empower each other to succeed. Sometimes it can be very difficult to get our clients to participate. These activities helped the most introverted members of our groups blossom.
The activities were successful in that they helped the clients to discuss personal issues that were holding them back from succeeding and moving forward. The activities helped individuals who do not like to participate to feel more a part of the group and not so alone.
After working with our clients and using some of the activities in the book we can see improvement in the areas of concern mentioned above. The activities can be altered to fit the needs and concerns of each unique group. Alanna's book provided yet another powerful resource of creative ideas and activities to help our clients grow. I would recommend this book not only because it has many useful ideas and activities, but because it will spark your creativity to develop even more as well.

Many Thanks to the authors for their service in writing this much needed and welcomed book. As a person w/family deployed to Iraq as well being an avid supporter of our Troops I learned early on that our men and women were coming home only to realize that their deployment wasn't over even though they were stateside. No one returns from war w/out side effects. Their lives are changed and they are no longer the same person they were before deployment. All their dreams and fantasy of returning home and "everything is going to be all right" is quickly shattered. I highly recommend this book to all active duty military and their families. As a society we must dissolve the fear and stigma of reaching out for support post deployment as a sign of weakness, this book is a step in the right direction.
I find the family unit is the least educated in terms of compassion, understanding, and what to expect when their loved ones return...which leads to conflict, confusion, disappointment and misery. A suggestion would be for the spouses to sit and read the book together so that as pertaining issues come up in regards to their circumstances the window of opportunity for discussion and communication is opened. This book guides both the Soldier and loved ones on what to expect, feel, and resources where to get support as well as instructions on how to deal with common problems that all the Troops experience. It is easy to read and comprehend. Since discovering the book I have started including it in care packages before the re-deployment process starts. So often our Soldiers are not given the knowledge of what to expect when they return home, especially the Nat'l Guard and Reserves, and even if they are, they don't "get it" until they actually have been home for a few months...then it starts to sink in. Courage After Fire is a very useful tool in taking care of our Troops returning and their families. I can easily recommend the book to civilians that don't have deployed family in that it offers knowledge of what our Troops have given to us as a nation and what they continue to go through once home.
